Barbara E. (Grundy) Maddaleno

February 1, 1948 ~ January 25, 2018 (age 69)

Barbara Eugenia Maddaleno, age 69, of Numa, Iowa passed away at the Golden Age Care Center on January 25, 2018 surrounded by family.

Barb was born on February 1, 1948 in Centerville, Iowa, the daughter of Betty Jane (Wells) and Robert E. Grundy. She attended Centerville schools. She was united in marriage to Mark Maddaleno in 1966 and to this union four children were born, Heather, Teressa, Bobby, and Melanie. Barb later married Randy Gooden in 1978 and welcomed three more children, Tara, Brandon, and Farrah. Barb spent the last ten years with her beloved partner, Dennis Breese.

She attended nursing school at Indian Hills and graduated with her LPN degree in 1976. She worked at the Seymour Care Center and Golden Age Care Center for several years. She was also employed at the Hy-Vee Bakery, South Fork Restaurant, the Numa Station, and Jim Buban Motors. She furthered her education at Indian Hills and Graceland University, majoring in Business Management, and began a second career as a librarian at Indian Hills in 1998. She worked alongside her good friend Deb Worley until her retirement in 2012.

Barb and Dennis loved spending time with their canine companion, Little Bit, watching sports together (especially Nascar), and taking long drives to enjoy the local scenery. Barb’s other hobbies included crocheting, cooking, painting, going to Rathbun Lake, sunbathing, writing and journaling, spending time with friends and family, and reading. She was always reading and could often be found getting lost in her books in the library stacks. She especially loved autobiographies and historical fiction and non-fiction. She spent the last few years crocheting hundreds of doilies, table runners, and coasters for her loved ones. She loved riding horses, listening to music, and collecting antiques and trinkets. She was a proud resident of Numa, IA for most of her life. She loved having a houseful of neighborhood kids and was a second mom to many, especially Neely. Barb loved to laugh and had an ornery sense of humor. You could often find her with her sister Pam, brother Jeff, and mom Betty, drinking coffee, telling stories, reminiscing, and laughing. To know Barb was to love her.

Barb was a member of the Numa Christian Church and St. Mary’s Catholic Church, as well as the Eagle’s Club.

Barb is survived by her partner Dennis Breese and their dog Little Bit of Centerville, IA; children, Heather (Glen) Koller of Tucson, Arizona, Teressa (Mike) Bogle of Centerville, IA, Bobby (Amanda) Maddaleno of Cedar, IA, Melanie Maddaleno of Bellevue, NE, Tara (David) Gooden of Santa Cruz, CA, Brandon (Sunny) Gooden of Ottumwa, IA, and Farrah (Ryan) Maddaleno of Ankeny, IA; grandchildren Joseph and Jacob Ross of Bellevue, NE, Nolan Bogle of Centerville, IA, Corbin Gooden and Madelyn Anders of Bondurant, IA, Samantha Koller of Tucson, AZ, and Cora Jane McArthur of Santa Cruz, CA.
