Daniel C. Brooks, age 69 of Moravia, passed away Friday, April 14, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center-West Lakes, in Des Moines, Iowa.
He was born on March 31, 1948 in Centerville, Iowa, the son of Larry and Margaret (Ward) Brooks. Dan graduated from Moravia High School in 1966.
Following high school, Dan attended Centerville Community College where he obtained an Associate's Degree. He then attended Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, Missouri, graduating with a bachelor's degree in Education in 1970. In 1972, He earned his Bachelor's degree in Secondary School Administration. He subsequently obtained his master's degree in Education from Northeast Missouri State University.
After graduate school, Dan accepted a teaching position in Mediapolis, Iowa. Following a brief period of time teaching in the Mediapolis School District, Dan relocated to Moravia where he began teaching history at Moravia High School. During this time, he was a volunteer fireman with the Moravia Volunteer Fire Department. A dedicated teacher passionate with his students' success, Dan taught for many years, retiring in 2004.
Along with being an educator in the classroom, Dan was also a long time Co-Coach with Phil Harrington of Girls 6 on 6 Basketball with 5 state contenders at Moravia High School. He was also the Athletic Director for 15 years.
In retirement, Dan enjoyed many hobbies, including volunteer work at the Moravia Public Library, fishing, hunting, owning race horses, active membership with the Sons of the Unionville American Legion, spending time with his lab dogs, and traveling to many places throughout the world, such as Ireland, Great Britain, and the mountains in Colorado.
Dan is survived by his step-sister, Vanessa (Pat) Nicoletto of Unionville, Iowa; six cousins, Leslie Thorn of Colorado, Linda (the late Dr. Carl) Rouse of Centerville, Iowa, Linda (Ron) Peru, Jane Ward of Moravia, Iowa, Nancy Kelly of Unionville, Iowa, and Bill (Cindy) Ward of Moravia, Iowa; his aunt, Judy Wallace; two nephews, Ryan Nicoletto of Bloomfield, Iowa and Brad Nicoletto of Moravia, Iowa; a niece, Paige Nicoletto of Unionville, Iowa; a great nephew, Cameron Nicoletto; a great niece, Madison Nicoletto; and his cat, Tiki.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Larry and Margaret Brooks; and a step-mother, Ruby Brooks.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 AM, Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Moravia with Pastor Terry Chapman officiating. A visitation will take place from 5-7PM on Monday, April 17, 2017 at Lange Funeral Home in Moravia. Burial will follow the funeral service at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Moravia.
