Mary Margaret (Walker) Goodman

November 12, 1926 ~ March 16, 2018 (age 91)

Mary Margaret (Walker) Goodman, age 91 of Centerville, passed away Friday, March 16, 2018 at Golden Age Care Center in Centerville.

Mary was born on November 12, 1926, in Centerville, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Nina (Guffey) Walker.   She graduated from Centerville High School with the Class of 1943.   She was united in marriage to John Goodman on June 15, 1946 in Centerville.  From this union, three children were born, John, Benny, and Bonnie.

Mary was a very active member of the community.  She was the Leader for TOPS in Centerville for many years.  She was also a Girl Scout Leader for Troop #105 for numerous years.  She was a little league baseball mom for several years.  Mary was a member of the First Baptist Church in Centerville, where she was very active, including teaching Sunday School and Bible School.  She was also involved in the VFW and the American Legion in Centerville.

Mary was a professional seamstress, including wedding gowns, tuxedos, and prom outfits.  At the age of 65, she retired from Hy-Vee in Centerville after 25 years of service at the Courtesy Counter.  At this time, she worked at the cable company until she was 70.   She enjoyed gardening, cooking and watching "Dancing with the Stars".   Mary loved spending time with her family.  She was a driver for her children's Rock and Roll band for many years. She was a very well loved person, and will be missed by all who knew her.

Mary is survived by her children, John (Jo) Goodman, Benny (Raeann) Goodman, and Bonnie Burns; a brother, Clyde William "Bill" Walker (Viola); eight grandchildren, Chris (JoAnn) Goodman, Johnny Joe Goodman, Jack Goodman, Nathan Goodman, Brandon (Jennifer) Goodman, Meri Goodman, Jagr Goodman, and Bryan (Julie) Burns; nine great-grandchildren, Zachary (and wife) Goodman, Kylie Goodman, Jacklynn Goodman, Annalise Goodman, Corbin Goodman, Keira Goodman, Berlin Goodman, Bridget (Daniel) Titus, and Brianne Burns; as well as her honorary children, Naomi Schmitter, and J. Hehir.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Goodman; her parents, Carl and Nina Walker; a daughter in infancy; a sister, Colleen Joan Owen; a grandson, Bradley Burns; and a son-in-law, Roger Burns.

Funeral Services will be held at 2PM, Sunday, March 18, 2018 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Reverend Lloyd Johnston officiating.  Burial will follow at Haines Cemetery, north of Centerville.  A visitation will take place on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville with family greeting friends from 1-2PM.  Memorials have been established to the family of Mary Goodman, and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home, 1900 South 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.  Condolences may be shared online at www.langefh.com.
