Robert Hobart Sr.November 16, 1920 ~ June 30, 2017 (age 96)
Robert Hobart, age 96, of Iowa City, Iowa, formerly of Moravia, Iowa, passed away Friday, June 30, 2017 at Lantern Park Specialty Care in Coralville, Iowa.
He was born in Centerville, Iowa November 16, 1920 to Oscar and Alice (Norton) Hobart. He married Mary Adams in Centerville May 29, 1942. He is survived by his children, Robert Hobart (Jane) of North Liberty, Iowa, Phillip Hobart (Linda) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Susan Dirks (Greg) of Iowa City, Iowa and Albert of Ogden Iowa, 14 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren, a brother, Oscar Hobart Jr., and a sister, Alice Montis of Waukee Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Mary, 4 sisters and 3 brothers, and 5 grandchildren.
Robert was very proud of his family’s armed services history, as all of his brothers served together in World War II. Robert was among the first to land in France on D Day June 6, 1944. He was assigned to the army engineers, saw action in France, Belgium and Germany. He was awarded the presidential unit citation, French unit citation, ETO Ribbon with 4 silver and bronze stars and a bronze arrowhead.
He was well known as the owner-operator of the Zephyr Cleaners in Centerville, Iowa for over 50 years.
Robert loved hunting and especially fishing. He sold his handmade fishing worms to individuals around the world and they are still being used to this day. He enjoyed watching Hawkeye football and basketball with his family.
His love of family, unique sense of humor and storytelling will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Friday, July 7, 2017 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Father Bill Hubmann officiating. Burial will follow in the Haines Cemetery, north of Centerville. A visitation will take place on Friday, July 7, 2017 at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville, with the family greeting friends from 1-2 PM.
