Albert LaVern "Slick" Shondel, age 77, of Centerville, Iowa, passed away Saturday, May 5, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

He was born on June 14, 1940 in Centerville, Iowa, the son of Albert Virgil and Wilma (Hayes) Shondel.  Slick was united in marriage to Karen Shepard Talbot on March 26, 1977 at the Drake Avenue Christian Church in Centerville.  The couple recently celebrated 41 years of marriage.

Slick worked in various industries throughout his lifetime.  He was employed with Viskase Corporation and worked as a heavy equipment operator before retiring several years ago.

Slick was very talented and creative.  He always enjoyed designing and creating crafts projects, such as woodworking and ornamental concrete items.  As the years progressed, what began as a hobby became part time employment for Slick and other family members, as he was always willing to share his knowledge.  He was even awarded a patent for a craft related invention.

In his earlier years, Slick was well known for his pitching abilities in men's fast pitch softball leagues.  Moreover, it was during his softball days that he was given the nickname "Slick."  He enjoyed motorcycle trips and more recently camping.  Most importantly, Slick cherished the time he was able to spend with his family and friends, especially his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Shondel of Centerville, Iowa; three children, Stephen Shondel, Greg Shondel, and Jeffrey Shondel; two step children, Scott (Tina) Talbot and Tammy (Bill) Snyder; eleven grandchildren, Crystal, Serena, David, Sara, April, Aryon, Kegan, Alix, Rylee, Craig, and Kaylee; nine great grandchildren; four brothers, Richard Shondel, Larry (Mary) Shondel, Jerry (Vicki) Shondel, and Virgil Shondel; and two sisters, Charlotte Halladay and Donna (Earl) Dromey.

Slick was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Nancy Davis and Phyllis Weaver.
