Arnold "Arn" Fredrick Pilkenton

May 24, 1926 ~ November 25, 2018 (age 92)

Arnold “Arn” Fredrick Pilkenton, age 92, formerly of Mystic, Iowa, passed away Sunday, November 25, 2018 at Manor Care Nursing Home in Cedar Rapids after a short illness.

Arn was born on May 24, 1926 in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Snoden and Clara Pilkenton.  Following high school, Arn proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1944-1946 on the USS Alcyone, as a Boatswain Mate.    He married Betty Murray in 1946.  They were later divorced.  He was united in marriage to Leah Jean (German) Ducey on June 24, 1961.

Following the Navy, Arn returned home to the farm.  He started working at Cargill, where he was a Foreman and truck driver. He later became the superintendent of the Buffalo, Iowa Salt Terminal for 20 years.  He loved to travel with his wife in their 5th wheel.  They went all over the United States, one of their favorites was Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Arn was a fantastic wood crafter, quilter, cross sticher, and a fisherman, who enjoyed playing cards and Turkey hunting.  He was a member of the Masonic Temple and the Shriners.  He will be missed by those who knew him best for his humor and orneriness. 

Left to honor Arn’s memory are his daughter, Patti (Mark) Greve of Hiawatha; his son, Daniel (Lynn) Pilkenton of Hiawatha; a son in law, Jerry Vaillancourt; five grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Arn was preceded in death by his wife, Leah J. Pilkenton; parents, Snoden and Clara Pilkenton; his daughter, Pamela Kay Vaillancourt; his sister and brother in law, Mary Jane (Howard) Smithiger; his brother and sister in law, Wayne (Nelda) Pilkenton; as well as several aunts and uncles.

A visitation will take place at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, Saturday, December 1, 2018, with the family greeting friends from 1-3 PM.  Burial will follow the visitation in the Highland Cemetery, Mystic.  A memorial has been established to the Family of Arnold Pilkenton and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S.18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.  Condolences may be shared online at www.langefh.com.
