Celia Louise Starchevich, age 96, of Centerville, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2018 at Golden Age Care Center.
Celia was born on December 15, 1921 in Mystic, Iowa, the daughter of Dave and Pearl (Lee) Risher. She was united in marriage to John Starchevich on July 1, 1938 in Unionville, Missouri. From this union, two sons were born, John "Steve" and David.
After high school graduation, she worked in Bettendorf at Farmall Works. During WWII, she worked at a factory making airplane parts. The couple then moved to southern Iowa, with their first home being in Clarkdale. She earned her Associate's Degree from Indian Hills Community College and began her teaching career in Numa. She taught there for two years in Elementary, while she continued her college education at Drake University, earning her Bachelor's Degree in Education. She further continued her education at Northeast Missouri State University, earning her Master's Degree for School Administration. She taught 2nd grade in Bloomfield for two years. She then began teaching in Centerville, and taught here for over 20 years.
Celia enjoyed gardening, cooking, and canning. She was a member of the Drake Avenue Christian Church in Centerville. She loved spending many years on the family farm raising her family.
Left to cherish Celia's memory are her son, Steve Starchevich of Centerville; and three grandchildren, Kelly (Kirk) Culver of Centerville, Stephenie (Tim) Mattly of Centerville, and Hope (Tod) Faris of Centerville; five great grandchildren, Kord and Keath Culver of Centerville, Thomas Mattly of Centerville, and Garrett and Addyson Faris of Centerville; a brother-in-law, William "Bill" McDanel; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dave and Pearl Risher; her husband, John Starchevich; her son, David Starchevich; a daughter-in-law, Lynn Starchevich; and three sisters, Elma (Gurnie) Hendon, Vesta (Fritz) Lloyd, and Lilamae McDanel.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at Highland Cemetery in Mystic with Pastor Brian Hargrave officiating. Memorials have been established to either the Highland Cemetery Association, HCI Hospice Care Services, or the Drake Avenue Christian Church, and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 South 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.
