Dean Carl Tomlin, age 85, of Moravia, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Dean was born east of Moravia, Iowa on March 18, 1933, the son of Carl and Roma (Foster) Tomlin. He graduated from Moravia Community School in the Class of 1950. On December 23, 1951, Dean was united in marriage to Wanda Cochran. To this union, they were blessed with three children, Dean Jr., Debbie and Mike.
Dean farmed most of his life. He sold cars for Parks and Brunt Ford and DeVore Motors in Centerville, Iowa for 25 years. He then started Dean Tomlin Insurance and he operated that for 23 years.
Dean loved to be with his family and friends. He enjoyed cutting firewood with his friends. He loved woodworking, making things for his children and grandchildren. He also announced the Moravia Fall Festival parade for many years.
Dean and Wanda lived in the Lake Rathbun area until their farm was purchased by Lake Rathbun, and they relocated north of Moravia, Iowa. Dean was a long-time member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Moravia. He was active in the church, and taught Sunday School for many years.
Left to honor Dean’s memory are his wife of almost 67 years, Wanda Tomlin of Moravia; his children, Dean Jr. (Vicky) Tomlin of Albia, Debbie (Lee) Smothers of Moravia, and Mike (Barb) Tomlin of Unionville, Missouri; eleven grandchildren, Isaac (Laura) Tomlin of Bloomfield, Rick (Steph) DeVore of Moravia, Jennifer (Elliott) Culver of Albia, Heather Maletta (Tim Potter) of Moravia, Miranda (Cliff) Tucker of Ottumwa, Anthony (Brooke) Smothers of Glenwood, Iowa, Brandon (Kara) Tomlin of Albia, Rachelle (Jacob) Beals of Adel, Iowa, Brianna (T.J.) Thies of Cedar Rapids, Sydney and Chase Tomlin of Unionville, Missouri; twenty great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one brother-in-law, Lynn Fenton, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Roma Tomlin; a sister, Lillian Fenton; a grandson, Kenny Smothers; as well as his maternal and fraternal grandparents.
Lange Funeral Home of Moravia, has been entrusted with the care of the Tomlin family. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 PM, Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Moravia with Pastor Christy Ehrle officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Moravia. A visitation will take place on Friday, October 5, 2018 at the Grace United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Moravia, with the family greeting friends from 5-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Grace United Methodist Youth Program and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
