Howard Donald "Don" Mathes, age 85, of Centerville, Iowa, went to be with the Lord on February 17, 2018.
He was born on January 25, 1933 in Graysville, Missouri, the son of Clarence and Roxie (Shelton) Mathes. Don attended country school as a child.
In his younger years, Don worked at Baxter Box. He later became employed at Admiral Veneer in rural Centerville for several years. Don eventually accepted a position with Moravia Lumber as a Sawyer and Lumber Grader. He worked with Moravia Lumber until his retirement at the age of 77.
He had been a member of the Dale Church for twenty years.
Don was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He enjoyed family gatherings, including summer fishing trips with the grandchildren. Don also enjoyed spending time with friends, and he never met a stranger that he couldn't strike up a conversation with.
Throughout his lifetime, Don possessed a passion for music. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing with several country western bands in the Southern Iowa area. Furthermore, Don occasionally sang and played the guitar at church.
Don also enjoyed collecting eagles and was fond of his Farmall Tractor, "Ole Red."
Left to cherish Don's memory include his wife, Shirley Mathes of Centerville, IA; his son, Craig Mathes of Centerville, IA and his daughter, Debbra (Mathes) Morin and her husband, Don of Mt. Pleasant, IA; grandsons Dustin (Kelly) Morin of Tiffin, IA, Derek (Kacie) Morin of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Darren (Mandi) Morin of Mt. Pleasant, IA; two step grandchildren, Jodie (Morin and husband, Melvin) Bose of Thorton, Colorado, and Jon Morin of Loveland, Colorado; a brother, Herb Mathes of Exline, IA; seven great grandchildren; and two step great grandchildren.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Roxie (Shelton) Mathes of Exline, IA; brothers, Edwin Mathes, Dain Mathes, and Nova Dean Mathes; and sisters, Golda Sleeth, Ozetta McElderry, and Loeta McElderry.
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Pastor Gerald Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in the Dale Cemetery, north of Centerville. A visitation will take place on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville, with the family greeting friends from 5-7 PM.
