Mary Margaret Davis Barkley

October 3, 1916 ~ September 16, 2018 (age 101)

Mary Margaret Davis Barkley of Plano passed away Sunday, September 16, 2018, age 101, at the Putnam County Care Center in Unionville Missouri.

Mary Margaret was born October 3, 1916 in Keokuk, Iowa to John L. and Edna Crystal (Mower) Smith. She graduated from Putnam County High School in Unionville, Missouri and attended the University of Missouri in Columbia. She was united in marriage to Glenn D. Davis on May 29, 1938. To this union, five children were born: Margaret, James, Jane, Glenda, and Warren. Glenn passed away on November 28, 1970. On August 28, 1974, she married H. Maxwell Barkley of Numa, Iowa. She welcomed his two daughters, Eleanor and Sonya, as her own.

Mary Margaret was an active member of the community. She was a long-time member of the Drake Avenue Christian Church in Centerville, Iowa, was a part of the Christian Women’s Fellowship, and taught an adult Sunday school class for many years. She was also interested in genealogy and local history, and was a member of the Putnam County Historical Society.

Mary Margaret loved being on the farm and caring for her animals. She also enjoyed playing the piano, reading, and working crossword puzzles. You could also always count on her baking a great loaf of bread.

Mary Margaret is survived by her five children: Margaret (Ralph) Folsom of Raleigh, North Carolina; James (Julie) Davis of DeSoto, Iowa; Jane (Mark) Love of Ames, Iowa; Glenda (Bob Driggs) Davis-Driggs of Mount Vernon, Iowa; and Warren (Deb) Davis of Fort Dodge, Iowa. She is also survived by grandson Alan Driggs (Catherina Pinnaro), grandson Jon Driggs (Liana Prudencio), grandson Benjamin Davis, great-granddaughter Nellie Driggs, step-daughter Eleanor (Don) Noble, step-daughter Sonya (Larry) Dove, nephew John Robert Smith, nephew Phillip Smith, nephew Dean Miller, nephew Ray Powders, step-grandson David Noble, step-grandson Jim Noble, step-grandson Jon Noble, step-granddaughter Jennifer Dove Daniels, and step-granddaughter Michelle Dove.

Mary Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, John and Crystal Smith, her brother, Robert Smith, her husband Glenn Davis, and her husband Max Barkley.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 am Monday, September 24, 2018 at Drake Avenue Christian Church in Centerville, Iowa. Burial will follow the service at the Union Church Cemetery in rural Putnam County, Missouri. A visitation will take place Sunday, September 23, 2018 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville, Iowa from 12:00 to 6:00 pm, with family greeting friends from 4:00 to 6:00 pm.
