Royce Deo Joiner, age 83, of Plano Iowa, passed away at Taylor House in Des Moines surrounded by family on Thursday, October 5, 2017.  

Royce was born in Centerville, Iowa to Herbert Leo and Cloe Wells Joiner on May 23, 1934 . He attended a one-room country school for 8 years and graduated from Seymour High School in 1953.  He married Gladys Cole in 1951. To this union, four children Nancy, Rodney, Cynthia and Robbie were born.  

After marriage, Royce worked for John Deere Company in Moline, IL for 1 year, then was called home to the family farm when his father died in 1952.    Royce farmed for 69 years continuing to grow his farm operation through hay and row crops, cattle and hogs.  Royce loved cattle and enjoyed going to cattle sales. Royce enjoyed all of his neighbors, and spent a lot of time with Larry and Willa Dobbs.   Most of all Royce really enjoyed being outdoors.

In addition to farming, Royce served his community in appointed and elected capacities including:  Iowa State Fair security guard for 30 years; ran a general store in Plano; served as Mayor of Plano and on the Plano City Council; 4-H leader for Johns Junior Feeders; Appanoose County Fair Board; superintendent of rodeo arena; named County Fair Dad; and in 1994 the Appanoose County Fair was dedicated to him.  Royce worked for the Appanoose Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service as field assistant, served on Johns Township Committee; and served 2 terms (8 years) as Appanoose County Supervisor. Royce was an active member of the Plano Christian Church, serving as deacon.  In addition, Royce was a Mason belonging to the Mystic Masonic Lodge for over 50 years, and a Shriner.   Royce was always reaching out to community residents who needed help. 

Survivors include the following family:  children Nancy of Des Moines, Rodney (Amy) of Plano, Cynthia Housh, and Robbie (Terri) of Carlisle, Iowa; grandchildren, Chad (Crystal) Muck and their children, Chloe, Rylie, and Aiden; Brandi Squires and children, Zach (Abigail) Squires and Gracie Squires,;Andy (Natasha) Joiner and their children, Chelsey (her daughter, Blaize Sloan), Kylee, Jaxton, and Bodie; Zeb (Danielle) Joiner and their children, Zoe', Vance, Vivian, and Johnny; Michalyn Ruby, Mellissa Housh, Ryan (Heather) Housh, Hillery Joiner, Kyle (Brianna) Joiner, Trevor, and Cortney;  Sisters, Pauline Golick, Marilyn (David) Koehler; Sister-in-laws Helen Joiner, Glida Cole, and Jessie (Richard) Davis, Nancy Litwiller, Margaret (Robert)Sullins.

Royce was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys, his twin Richard; siblings Roscoe and Carol Soppe, son-in-law Douglas Housh, 5 brothers in law, 4 sisters in law, 4 nephews, 2 nieces and his parents. 

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Taylor House in Des Moines, Iowa, Plano Christian Church, Lange Funeral Home, the extended family and host of friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30AM, Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at the Plano Christian Church in Plano, Iowa with Pastor Marilyn Koehler, Pastor Chad Combs, and Pastor Dave Welch officiating.  Interment will follow the services at Crossroads Cemetery near Plano.  A visitation will take place from 5-7PM Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville. A Masonic Service will be held at 4PM, Tuesday, at the funeral home prior to the start of visitation.  Memorials have been established to either Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Appanoose County Fair, American Cancer Society, or to the Plano Christian Church and Ladies Auxiliary and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.Condolences may be shared online at
