Shirley Ann (Oden) McAnelly

October 15, 1934 ~ September 18, 2019 (age 84)

Shirley (Oden) McAnelly, age 84, of Centerville, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at MercyOne Medical Center in Centerville.

Shirley was born on October 15, 1934 in Appanoose County, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas “Britt” and Cora (Johnson) Oden.  She graduated from Centerville High School.  She was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” N. McAnelly on March 6, 1953.  To this union, two children were born, Doug and Bruce.

Following high school, Shirley worked for Boeing in California.  She and Bob moved their family to New Jersey, and lived there for a few years, before returning to Centerville in the late 1950’s. Because of Bob’s employment, their family lived in the following areas for over 23 years, Jerseyville, Illinois, Havana, Illinois, and Fort Dodge, Iowa. Upon Bob’s retirement, the family then moved back to Centerville to enjoy the little things in life. 

Shirley was very competitive in everything that she did in life.  She enjoyed playing Bridge with her friends, and going golfing.  She loved watching her children’s activities.  Shirley was a long-time member of the First United Methodist Church in Centerville.

Left to cherish Shirley’s memory are her children, Doug (Barbara) McAnelly of Indianola and Bruce (Sallee) McAnelly of Glasgow, Missouri; five grandchildren, Dru (Meredith) McAnelly, Wade (Jamie) McAnelly, Britt McAnelly, Joe (Emily) McAnelly, and Ben McAnelly; seven great grandchildren, Justin Miller, Madison McAnelly, Jamison McAnelly, Zane McAnelly, Zoee McAnelly, Murray McAnelly, and Meyer McAnelly; one great great grandchild, Rylee Miller; her sisters, Beverly Baldwin of Mystic and Kay (Don) Hanson of Centerville; 2 sisters in law, Dorothy Oden of Exline, Linda Howard of Oskaloosa; brother in law, Jim (Anita) McAnelly of Minneapolis, Minnesota; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Britt and Cora Oden; her husband, Bob McAnelly; and her siblings, Bob Oden, Wendell Oden, Jack Oden, Donald Oden, John Oden, Britt Junior Oden, Dolores Foster, Dorisdell Germanio, Kendell Oden, and Phyllis Mitchell.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00AM, Thursday, September 26, 2019 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Pastor Pam Kranzler officiating.   Burial will follow the service at Exline Cemetery in Exline.  Visitation will take place Thursday, September 26, 2019 from 8:00AM-10:00AM, with the family greeting friends from 9:00AM-10:00AM.  Memorials have been established to either the First United Methodist Church or the Drake Public Library (maintenance), and may be dropped off or mailed to Lange Funeral Home, 1900 South 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.  Condolences may be shared online at
