Sister Theresa "Mary Ann" Omastiak, age 80, of Centerville, Iowa, passed away Friday, May 18, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center, Long Term Care in Centerville.
Mary Ann was born to Florian and Teresa (Vojcek) Omastiak on July 25, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois. Following high school graduation, Mary Ann earned her bachelor's degree in Education. She later earned a Master's Degree in Elementary Education from Loyola University in Chicago.
She spent many years in the field of education. She taught elementary education at St. Catherine's and later, at St. Micheal's in Chicago. Mary Ann eventually accepted a position as principal of St. Micheal's, a job she held until her retirement.
Following her retirement, Mary Ann relocated to Centerville in September of 2004.
Mary Ann was a devout member of the Catholic Church her entire life. In 1958, at the age of 21, she became a catholic sister of the Benedictine Order.
She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other family members and friends.
Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Ed Omastiak, Jim Omastiak, Florian Omastiak, and Frank Omastiak; three sisters, Marie Mega, Carolyn Omastiak, and Ann Sheston; and a special friend, Sister Imogene Jung.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Centerville, with Father Bill Hubmann officiating. A visitation will take place from 10-11 AM, Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Centerville. Following the service, cremation will be accorded and private burial will be held. Memorials have been established to either the St. Mary's Catholic Church, or to HCI Hospice Care Services and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
