Walter Henry Schwager, age 94, of Centerville, passed away Sunday, August 4, 2019 at Centerville Specialty Care.
Walter was born on December 26, 1924 in Orchard, Nebraska, the son of August and Christina (Leading) Schwager. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy on December 18, 1943 in Omaha, Nebraska. He served in WWII on the Motor Torpedo Boat Base NO. 24, and the USS Natrona. He was honorably discharged on January 18, 1946 in San Pedro, California as a SV6.
Walter was united in marriage to Dorothy Williams on November 28, 1968 in Rock Island, Illinois. Walter worked at Farmall in the Quad Cities for 29 years as a Quality Control Inspector. At the same time, he operated a laundry truck part time. He retired at the age of 60, and moved his family to a farm North of Moulton, where Walter and his daughter, Judith would mow yards, plow snow, and raised cattle for about 8 years. During his retirement, he thoroughly enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Left to honor Walter’s death are his daughter, Judith Ann Wells of Milan, Illinois; a very special friend and caregiver, Dennis Ocker of Centerville; a brother, Elmer Schwager; as well as several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews; also, special friend and caretaker, Laura Noel.
Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Schwager; his parents, August and Christina Schwager; a son, Francis “Pete” Schwager; several siblings; a step son, Richard Coburn; several grandchildren, and several great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00AM, Thursday, August 8, 2019 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Rev. Ken Richardson officiating. Burial will follow the service at Haines Cemetery north of Centerville, where military rites will be conducted. A visitation will take place Thursday, August 8, 2019, from 9:00AM-10:00AM at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville. An open memorial in Walter’s name has been established, and may be dropped off or mailed to Lange Funeral Home, 1900 South 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.
