Obituary

Dean Roger Kaster, 86, of Unionville, IA passed away on November 20, 2020 at MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines, due to heart failure.

Dean was born at home on October 29, 1934, the middle son of Forrest Earl and Ora (Richmond) Kaster of Moravia. He attended Moravia Community Schools, graduating in 1952. While in high school, he worked parttime for the Moravia Union.

On June 26, 1955 he married Jane Ellen Brain at Grace Methodist Church in Moravia. The couple moved to Centerville where he was employed at Uniform Printing until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1957. After being stationed in Gonsenheim, Germany, he was honorably discharged in 1963. He always said he was proud to be an American and serve his country.

After military service, Dean and Jane returned to Centerville, where he worked for the Iowegian and Ottumwa Courier newspapers before joining Iowa Southern Utilities as a meter reader. He retired from I.S.U. in 1999. The couple lived in Moravia with their children, Kandi, Sheri, Matthew, and Jan, all of whom graduated from MHS, before moving to their new home on the Brain family farm near Unionville in 2012. In recent years, he was a driver for Carter-Miller Services until a few months before his death.

Dean was a lifelong member of Grace United Methodist Church and held several offices within the church. He coached both boys’ and girls’ Little League teams as well as high school softball. He was also a referee for area high school baseball, football, and basketball games. He served 16 years on the Appanoose County Board of Supervisors, several years on the Moravia School Board, and was President of Rural Schools of Iowa. He was also a member of various Fall Festival committees, the Historical Society, the Moravia Fire Department, American Legion, and was a dedicated member of the Democratic party. Dean was proud to say he had danced with his wife around the world, sharing a dance everywhere they traveled. He loved golf, had a warm sense of humor, and loved to tell jokes.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Don and Larry Kaster, and a daughter, Kandi Baxter. He is survived by his wife, Jane, daughter Sheri (Jeff McDanel) Kaster and son Matthew Kaster, all of Unionville, IA and Jan (John) Santafede of Cape Carteret, NC. He is also survived by grandchildren Trevor (Sarah) Baxter, Ashley Baxter, Matthew Mikel Kaster, J. D. McDanel, Alex Leifheit, and John Santafede Jr., along with great-grandchildren Gracie and Malachi Baxter, and Castiel, Wynter, and Zaymian Kaster. Other survivors include sisters-in-law Marolyn Kaster, Dixie Kaster, and Joyce Taylor, and many nieces and nephews.

According to Dean’s wishes, cremation has been accorded. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a private family service will be held, with burial to follow at a later date. A community Celebration of Life will be held on the Kasters’ wedding anniversary, June 26, 2021.  In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to either Grace United Methodist Church in Moravia or to the Moravia First Responders and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.  Condolences may be shared online at www.langefh.com.
