Donald L. Haines, age 93 of Exline, Iowa passed away Saturday, November 14, 2020 at the Homestead of Centerville.
He was born on May 25, 1927 in Mendota, Missouri, the son of Orval and Lillian Flo (Newland) Haines. Donald graduated from Exline High School in 1945.
He entered the United States Army on October 12, 1945. Donald served his country faithfully during World War II, honorably discharging from the service on November 21, 1946.
Donald was united in marriage to Dorothy Drake on August 21, 1949 in Exline, Iowa. The couple were blessed with three children, Danny, David, and Dale.
Donald spent many years farming in the Exline area. In his earlier adult years, he also sold insurance for Grinnell Reinsurance above the bank on the Centerville Square.
In the late 1970s Donald served four years on the Appanoose County Board of Supervisors. As a supervisor, Donald helped write the grant for the establishment of the Appanoose County Community Railroad, with its inception in 1983.
It should be noted that Donald served many years as the Exline City Clerk.
As a man of faith, he was a lifelong Methodist, most recently attending the Faith United Methodist Church in Centerville. Donald also enjoyed numerous hobbies, including gardening, hunting, and making deer jerky.
Left to honor Donald’s memory include his three children, Danny (Barbara) Haines of Moulton, Iowa, David (Marketta) Haines of Exline, Iowa, and Dale (Karen) Haines of O’Fallon, Missouri; six grandchildren, Kelly (Robert) Valentine, Erica Tunink, Melissa (Bradley) VanBlaricon, Janelle (Memo) Zenteno, Nicole (Rob) Devall, and Adam Haines; thirteen great grandchildren; in laws, Larry (Carol) Drake of Exline, Iowa and Connie Drake of Indianola, Iowa.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Orval and Lillian Flo Haines; his loving wife, Dorothy Haines; two brothers, Walter and Lester Haines; a sister, Wilma Perkins, and a twin sister, Deloris Musgrove; and a great grandchild, Rowdee Valentine.
Graveside will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, November 20, 2020 at Exline Cemetery with Pastor Micaiah Stanley officiating. Military Rites will be conducted following the service. An open visitation will take place from 9-10:15 AM on Friday, November 20, 2020 at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville. A memorial has been established to the Faith United Methodist Church of Centerville and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544. Condolences may be shared online at www.langefh.com. According to the Covid-19 guidelines established by the State of Iowa, masks will be required to enter the facility.
