Duane Barnabas Payer, age 85, of Centerville, Iowa passed away Wednesday, January 01, 2020, at MercyOne Medical Center, Long Term Care in Centerville.
Duane was born on June 11, 1934 on the family farm in Pocahontas County, Iowa. He was the son of John and Agnes (Stoulil) Payer. He attended rural school through 8th grade, where he received 1st place in the rural school spelling contest for the county and state. Growing up, Duane helped feed the livestock on the family farm. He always helped his mother by bringing up the water from the cistern and filling her washtub for the Monday morning wash.
Duane went to high school in Pocahontas, Iowa, where he was active in F.F.A. holding offices all four years. He also played basketball for three of those years. Duane graduated from Pocahontas High School with the Class of 1952. He entered the United States Army in 1952, spending most of his time in the South Korea area, operating heavy equipment. He retired from inactive duty as a Corporal in 1956.
Duane was united in marriage to Shirley Niemand on June 19, 1956 in Pocahontas, Iowa. To this union, three children were born, David, Denise and Denae. He always loved being there for their activities. He enjoyed playing cards, reading mysteries, pitching horse shoes, taking care of the yard, and most importantly, spending time with his family.
Duane worked for the Pocahontas Community Schools as the Director of Transportation and Janitorial Services, until he moved his family to Centerville in 1969, and took the position of Director of Transportation, Director of Building and Grounds, while also handling purchasing, and Hot Lunch Programs for the Centerville School district. While balancing all his duties at the school, Duane ran a tight ship, with no detail missed. His organization and leadership were first class for 34 years. After retiring from the school district in 1995, he began working part time for Iowa Trust and Savings Bank for the next 23 years. During his retirement, he returned to his roots of farming. He enjoyed every moment helping his son in law on their family farm.
Duane is a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville, a previous member of the Knights of Columbus, and bowled on a bowling league for many years.
Left to honor Duane’s memory are his wife, Shirley Payer; his children, David Payer, Denise (Rick) Sebolt, and Denae Payer; eight grandchildren, Josh (Chrissy) Rodrick, Melissa (Bradley) Brevig, Meagan (Paul) Sobolik, Steven (Shelley) Kaster, Megan (Justin) Jedlicka, Staci (Dustin) Freeman, Scott (Ashley) Kaster, Aryc Huff; eighteen great grandchildren; a brother, Robert (Patty) Payer; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, John and Agnes Payer; and his siblings, Doris Pickering, Bernice Noyes, Geraldine Jordan, Jerome Payer, Raymond Payer, Jack Payer, and Ronald Payer; and great granddaughter, Coralynn Sobolik.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM, Monday, January 6, 2020 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville with Father Timothy Armbruster officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Haines Cemetery, north of Centerville. A visitation will take place on Sunday, January 5, 2020 at Lange Funeral Home in Centerville from 12 PM-5 PM, with the family receiving friends from 3-5 PM. A Prayer Service will be conducted by Father Timothy Armbruster at 5 PM on Sunday.
