Florence Elizabeth Sherrard (Henderson) passed away at the Mercy One Long-Term Care Center in Centerville on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at the age of 98.
She was born October 16, 1922 at Monterey near Moulton, Iowa. She was the daughter of John Samuel Henderson and Faye Ruth Henderson (Jordan). She was 2 when her family moved to Plano.
She graduated from Plano High School at the age of 16 in 1939. She then graduated from the 2-year teaching program at Drake University in 1941 and was part of the Queen’s Court at the Drake Relays the same year. She later received a Bachelor’s degree from Drake in 1974. She was a grade school teacher for 27 years with almost all of those in the Seymour School District. Hundreds of local residents had her for a teacher.
She married Joe Dillon Sherrard on July 3, 1942 in Berea, Kentucky. She loved and was very proud of her family. They had 5 children: Jim (Susan) Sherrard of Phoenix, Arizona, Margaret (Ken) Fish of Las Vegas, Nevada, David (Kathy) Sherrard of Plano, Steve (Cindy) Sherrard of Centerville and John (Char) Sherrard of Riverbank, California. They have 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother, 1 daughter-in-law (Susan Sherrard) and 1 grandchild (Scott Henke).
She accepted her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at an early age. She helped lead worship as a pianist/organist at the Plano Christian Church for almost 80 years from 1933 at the age of 11 until 2012 at the age of 90. She also taught Sunday School Class for several years. She’s participated in hundreds of funerals over the years helping with the music.
She was very active in social clubs including ODO club, Seymour club and PEO. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Gideon’s Auxiliary.
She loved to play cards, particularly pitch and bridge. She participated in various bridge groups in the area and enjoyed cards with friends and in her social clubs. She was up for almost any game, of any kind, at any time someone wanted to play. She was a tenacious competitor.
She was greatly loved by her family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held at 10 AM, Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at the Plano Christian Church in Plano, Iowa with Pastor Chad Combs officiating. Burial will follow the service in the Crossroads Cemetery near Promise City, Iowa. A visitation will take place on Monday, May 10, 2021 at Lange Funeral Home and Crematory in Centerville, with the family receiving friends from 5-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Plano Christian Church and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.
