Eugene "Gene" Clifton Talbot

October 14, 1931 ~ November 14, 2020 (age 89)

Eugene “Gene” Clifton Talbot, age 89 of Centerville, Iowa passed away Saturday, November 14, 2020 at MercyOne Medical Center, Centerville due to COVID-19.

Gene was born on October 14, 1931 in Centerville, Iowa, the son of Frank A. Talbot Sr. and Mary Barrier.  He graduated from Centerville High School in 1949.  Gene was united in marriage to Bonnie Elaine Exline on December 24, 1950 in Centerville, Iowa and to this union of marriage, three children, Richard, Joanne, and Bobby were born.

Gene started working for Talbot Lumber, his family’s business, when he was in high school.  In the early 1950s, Gene graduated from the Iowa Highway Patrol Academy.  Upon graduating from the academy, he made the difficult decision to bypass a career as a state patrolman and instead, continue working at Talbot Lumber.

In the mid-1950s, Gene joined the Centerville Fire Department as a volunteer fireman.  He maintained his position with the department for thirty years.

A believer in the benefits of capitalism, Gene had many business ventures throughout his lifetime.  Along with operating the lumberyard, he bought Hiatt’s Fur and Seed, and added Army Surplus and Ball cards in the late 1970s.  Located just off the Centerville Square, Gene and his wife Bonnie owned and operated the business until the 1990s.

Gene also farmed with family members and friends for many years, acquiring numerous properties throughout Appanoose County.  He never met a stranger.

Gene enjoyed many hobbies in his free time, such as hunting, fishing, and trapping.  He also enjoyed traveling with Bonnie to Padre Island, and visiting their property in Harlingen, Texas.  Furthermore, Gene was an avid collector of numerous items, especially coins and guns.

Left to honor his memory include two children, Richard Talbot of Centerville, Iowa and Joanne (Gary) Cridlebaugh of Centerville, Iowa; two grandchildren, Mike (Sarah) Cridlebaugh of Grandview, Missouri and Sara (Kevin) Goryl of West Chester, Pennsylvania; two great grandchildren, Aidan Cridlebaugh and Lincoln Goryl; a sister-in-law, Bonnie M. Talbot of Centerville, Iowa; brother-in-law, Leonard Vidmar of Urbandale, Iowa; a special niece, Linda McAninch of Iconium, Iowa; along with several other nieces and nephews.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Mary (Barrier) Talbot Sr.; his loving wife, Bonnie Talbot on April 18, 2020; a son, Bobby Talbot; four brothers, Garnet, John, Frank Jr., and Charles; as well as an infant sister.

According to Gene’s wishes, cremation has been accorded and there will be no scheduled services at this time.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Appanoose County Historical Museum and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.  Condolences may be shared online at
