Obituary

Fred McBride age 66, of Moravia, Iowa passed away Sunday morning, May 16, 2021 at MercyOne Medical Center in Centerville, Iowa.

Frederick Wayne McBride was born on June 7, 1954 in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Lydle Wayne and Mary Lou (Myers) McBride.  Fred graduated from Moravia High School in 1973.  He married Janice Ann Ballanger on June 23, 1973 at the Grace Tabernacle Baptist Church in Centerville.  To this union, the couple were blessed with two children, Travis and Stephanie.

Fred enlisted in the United States Army in 1975.  He later transitioned to the Iowa National Guard and continued serving his country with dignity, stateside and overseas.  Fred’s military career spanned more than two decades and throughout his service, he received numerous military awards, including a Purple Heart, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with m Device, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, along with several other awards.

In his civilian life, Fred was an auto mechanic.  Through his love of rebuilding cars, he was employed as a mechanic at many shops throughout his working career, such as NAPA, Quality Auto, DeVore Motors, and Belzer Ford. 

He maintained many hobbies and passions throughout his lifetime, including but not limited to hunting, fishing, gardening and canning.  It should be stated that Fred’s patriotic spirit to his country did not end upon his honorable discharge from the military, as he became a faithful, longtime member of the Unionville, Iowa American Legion.  Most importantly, Fred cherished his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

Fred is survived by his wife of 47 years, Janice McBride of Moravia; two children, Travis (Jessica) McBride of Manitowoc, Wisconsin and Stephanie (Harry) Burke of Centerville, Iowa; six grandchildren, Desiree (Cody) Carlson, Macy (Zack) Underwood, Carson Underwood, Nolan McBride, Logan McBride, and Haley McBride; two great grandchildren, Wenry Carlson and Denny Alice Carlson; six siblings, Terri (Gerald) Buesing of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Barb (Don) Perkins of Albia, Iowa, Carla Cochran of Moravia, Iowa, Peggy Sue (Larry) Bird of Ashland, Wisconsin, Becky (Bill) Underwood of Moravia, Iowa, and Susie Long (Kenny) of Centerville, Iowa; two aunts, Patricia McBride Osteen of Ottumwa, Iowa and Elaine (Ray) Jackson of Ames, Iowa; as well as many nieces and nephews, and a lot of good friends.

He was preceded in death by parents, Lydle and Mary Lou McBride; his paternal grandparents, Albert Elmer and Kathryn (Downer) McBride; as well as his maternal grandparents, Fred and Norine Freda (Collins) Myers.

Funeral services with full military rites will take place at 10 AM, Thursday, May 20, 2021 at Lange Funeral Home in Moravia with Pastor Terry Chapman officiating.  A visitation will take place on Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at Lange Funeral Home in Moravia, with the family receiving friends from 5-7 PM.  Following the service, Fred will be cremated.  A memorial has been established to the Family of Fred McBride, to be determined at a later date, and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home, 1900 S. 18th St, Centerville, IA, 52544.  Condolences may be shared online at www.langefh.com or on the Lange Funeral Home Facebook page.
