Irven Robert Polson

September 8, 1933 ~ March 14, 2020 (age 86)

Irven Robert Polson, age 86, of Moravia, Iowa, passed away Saturday, March 14, 2020 at the Legacy Lodge in Chariton, Iowa.

He was born on September 8, 1933 in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Irven Michael Polson and Jeanet Pauline Leasure.  Irven’s formative years were spent on the east side of Des Moines, graduating from East High School in 1951.  He was united in marriage to Sheryl Ann Sporaa on January 27, 1956 and to this union of marriage, three children were born, William Robert, Mary Ellen, and David Michael.  The couple recently celebrated sixty-four years of marriage.

It should be noted that in his earlier years, Irven served his country faithfully in the United States Army during the Korean War.

In June of 1955, Irven began employment with John Deere in Des Moines.  He worked in sheet metal layout in his early years with the company.  A career spanning thirty-four years, Irven retired from John Deere in July of 1989 as a sheet metal inspector.

Retiring at the age of 55, Irven and Sheryl made the conscious decision to remain active in retirement.  The couple spent a week in Arkansas in 1992 working on a project with Habitat for Humanity.  They also enjoyed working with MMAP (Mobile Missionary Assistance Program) for several years.  Traveling throughout the United States, and even into northern Mexico, Irven and Sheryl worked tirelessly on numerous projects with MMAP.  Moreover, their first project with MMAP included building a church in Estrella, Arizona.

In retirement Irven and Sheryl celebrated their sense of adventure through twelve years of fulltime RVing.  The nomadic lifestyle they so eagerly achieved during this period of time included their love of camping.  Furthermore, they spent eighteen years as campground hosts at Gooseberry Falls State Park in northern Minnesota.

Irven spent many active years in Boy Scouts of Iowa packs #4 and #9, and also served as a Do Dad for Campfire Girls.

Irven is survived by his wife, Sheryl Polson of Moravia, Iowa; three children, William Robert Polson of Plant City, Florida, Mary Ellen (Michael) Harris of Pella, Iowa, and David Michael (Valerie) Polson of Des Moines, Iowa; five grandchildren, Stephen (Ashley) Neff of Madrid, Iowa, Jonathan Neff of St. Louis, Missouri, Carly Polson of Ames, Iowa, Matthew Polson of Ames, Iowa, and Krista Polson of Des Moines, Iowa; five great grandchildren, Jude Neff, Kevin Neff, Charlie Neff, Norman Neff, and Walter Neff.

He was preceded in death by his parents; along with two sisters, Merle Jean Allison and Gloria Ann Sweeney.

According to Mr. Polson’s wishes, cremation has been accorded and there will be no scheduled memorial services.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Chariton Legacy Lodge (Circle of Life Hospice) and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, 1900 S. 18th St., Centerville, Iowa, 52544.  Condolences may be shared online at
