Obituary

Jerry Lynn Bubenyak, age 71, of Centerville, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2020 at his home.

Jerry was born on June 4, 1949 in Centerville, Iowa, the son of Edward John and Ferne Beatrice (Whitmer) Bubenyak.  He graduated from Centerville High School with the Class of 1967.  Jerry furthered his education at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, majoring in Automotive Repair.    On June 14, 1969, Jerry was united in marriage to Lois Marie Coltrain in Centerville, Iowa.  To this union, two children were born, Jay and Melissa.

Following college, Jerry began working at Centerville Body Shop as a mechanic.  He worked there for several years before beginning his career at Union Carbide in the machine maintenance department.  Later in Jerry’s career, he transitioned to plant maintenance.  He retired from Union Carbide (Viskase/Bemis/Amcor) in the summer of 2016, to do the things he and Lois loved to do.

Jerry enjoyed being outdoors, including camping, traveling, fishing, etc.  He also loved working on cars and constructing things, including building Lois’ Beauty Salon.

Jerry was a very active person in the community, and was presented as Centerville Citizen of the Year in 2012.  One of his main passions was Boy Scouts.  He was the Scout Master in Centerville for nearly 40 years.  Furthermore, he received the Silver Beaver Award for his distinguished service to young people: the highest award that a council can give to a volunteer leader for service to the youth.  Most importantly, he cherished his family, including his children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many more.

Left to honor Jerry’s memory are his children, Jay (Sonya Birkicht) Bubenyak of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Melissa (Jonathon) Willey of Centerville; four grandchildren, Cameron Bubenyak, Griffin Bubenyak, Franklynn Willey, and Carolynn Willey; a brother-in-law, Gary Moore of North Liberty, Iowa; as well as several other family members, including nieces, nephews, in-laws, and cousins.

Jerry was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Bubenyak; his parents, Edward and Ferne Bubenyak; an infant son; and a sister, Karen Moore.

Private Graveside services will be held.  A Public Celebration of Life service will be announced at a later date.  Memorials have been established to EveryStep Hospice or to the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 33 of Centerville, and may be mailed to Lange Funeral Home and Crematory, C/O Bubenyak family, 1900 South 18th Street, Centerville, Iowa 52544.  Condolences may be shared online at www.langefh.com.
