John Pierce Appler

January 19, 1934 ~ March 28, 2021 (age 87)

Obituary

John Pierce Appler, age 87 of Moulton, passed away Sunday, March 28, 2021 at Good Samaritan Society in Ottumwa.

John was born the son of the late Glenn Appler and the late Mildred (Lindley) Appler on January 19, 1934 in Moulton, Iowa.  He graduated from Moulton High School with the Class of 1951.  John served his country faithfully in the Army, stationed in Korea and Japan from 1954-1955.  He also served many years in the Naval Reserve, until his honorable discharge.  On March 31, 1956, John was united in marriage to Barbara Louise Kirby in Moulton, Iowa.

John lived all his life on the family farm west of Moulton where he and his wife ran a dairy business for over 30 years.  During those years many classes of Moulton school kids were given the opportunity to tour the dairy and see where milk came from.  Bottle feeding the baby calves and seeing the hundreds of gallons of milk in the bulk tank were some of the highlights of the day.   In addition to dairy, he raised beef cattle and ran a farrow to finish hog operation.  John practiced conservation tillage his entire life and was one of the first to no-till row crops in the area.  He was very innovative, and custom modified his equipment to improve his operation. He was also extremely proud to receive the Iowa Heritage Farm Award for having a family farm for over 150 years.  John was involved in many community groups throughout his life.  John was a member of the Moulton United Methodist Church, and was the National Director for the National Dairy Herd Improvement Association.  He was also a 4-H leader for several years.  John served on the County Extension Board, as well as the Moulton-Udell School Board.

Left to honor John’s memory are his children, Glenn (Jackie) Appler of DeWitt, Iowa, Belinda Appler of Lisle, Illinois, Kent (Laura) Appler of Clermont, Iowa, Brad (Jennifer) Appler of Bloomfield, Iowa, and Michael (Susan) Appler of Norwalk, Iowa; a sister, Linda (Dale Noack) Scheffer of Tuscon, Arizona; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Appler of San Jose, California; grandchildren, Mallory (John) Shumate, Nathan Appler, Marci King, Joe Appler, Kaitlyn (Will) Kincart, Kathryn and Matthew Appler; three great grandchildren, Jackson, Natalie, and William; and nephews Edward (Pamela) Scheffer, Joel (Julie) Appler and Brian (Danielle) Appler.
