Kathryn Irene Knorr Houser, age 92 of Centerville, Iowa passed away Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at Centerville Specialty Care.
Kathryn was born on September 26, 1928, the daughter of John and Mildred (Padavich) Buban. While in high school, she was very active in many groups, especially choir. She graduated from Centerville High School with the Class of 1946. Following high school graduation, Kathryn was united in marriage to George August Knorr, and to this union, one child was born, Stephen Jon Knorr. The couple later divorced.
In December of 1959, Kathryn began working for Iowa Southern Utilities as a legal secretary for Attorney and Vice President, Robert Greenleaf. She worked there for a period of time. In the early 1960’s, Kathryn was united in marriage to Walter “Roy” Houser. Kathryn then continued her education, obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education from Truman State University, a Master’s Degree in Education on May 15, 1977 from Eastern Kentucky University, as well as worked towards her doctorate at the University of Missouri in Adult and Vocational Education. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree, she started her teaching career at Wauzeka Public School in Wauzeka, Wisconsin. Kathryn then took a position as the Assistant Professor of Business Education and Secretarial Science at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri from 1979-1990. She also worked for one year as a registrar at Culver-Stockton.
Kathryn was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, (American Assn of University Women) St. Mary’s Choir, and Musicale and Croatian Fest Committee among many others. She was an advocate of Education, always trying to engage students and their parents as partners in a positive, learning-focused classroom community.
Kathryn grew up in a catholic household. She was a practicing Catholic throughout her lifetime. In 1990, Kathryn returned to Centerville and she was an active member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville, where she also sang in the church choir until her health declined. She loved music, especially polka music. Kathryn also enjoyed helping with the Croatian Fest in Centerville every year. She was very fond of baking and gardening in her free time. Kathryn especially looked forward to her class reunions. Most importantly, she cherished the time she spent with her family. She was the family historian, always taking photos of the family.
Left to cherish Kathryn’s memory are her grandchildren, Evan (Brooke) Knorr of Centerville and Joel Knorr of Centerville; a daughter in law, Cathie Knorr of Centerville; two brothers, James Buban of Van Alstyne, Texas and John (Virginia) Buban of Knoxville; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mildred Buban; her husband, Walter “Roy” Houser in 1987; and a son, Stephen Jon Knorr in 2015.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00PM, Saturday, November 21, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville with Father Timothy Armbruster officiating. Burial will follow the service at Oakland Cemetery in Centerville. A Visitation will take place Saturday, November 21, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Centerville, with the family greeting friends from 1:00-2:00PM. According to the Covid-19 guidelines established by the State of Iowa, masks will be required to enter the facility.
