Kenneth “Kenny” Elmer Brown, age 83, of Moravia, passed away Saturday, April 18, 2020 at Golden Age Care Center in Centerville.
Kenny was born on October 16, 1936, the son of Harry Glen Brown and Beryl Lucille (Dicks) Brown. He graduated from Moravia High School with the Class of 1955. He was united in marriage to Wanda Mae Benz on June 16, 1957 at the Grace United Methodist Church in Moravia.
Following high school graduation, Kenny moved to Cedar Rapids and worked at Iowa Manufacturing Company as a welder for 3 years. He then moved to Ottumwa, and worked for Coca-Cola in Delivery, for a brief period of time. In 1963, the couple purchased the family farm in Moravia. Agriculture has been a way of life for Kenny ever since. The couple bought their first livestock trailer in 1979 to transport horses to horse shows, and later to rodeo’s.
In 2010, the Appanoose County Fair was dedicated to him. This began in the early 1980’s with local friends and neighbors asking Kenny to haul their livestock to the market, which grew into a year-round business. During this time, he was also asked to haul the livestock for the Appanoose County 4-H Livestock Sale. He hauled livestock for many years. He especially loved helping the youth with their 4-H projects, and being a judge for the 4-H horse show and surrounding county fairs.
During this time, Kenny still managed to find time to volunteer, serving two terms on the Moravia School Board and several years on the Appanoose Soil Conservation Board. In 1963, the Brown’s were awarded the Des Moines Register Iowa Conservation Achievement award, and was selected by the Farmers Home Administration as Farm Family of the Year in 1969.
Kenny was an active member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Moravia, serving in various committees. He was extremely fond of horses, and belonged to the Saddle Club. He was also a member of the Tractor Club later in life.
Left to honor Kenny’s memory are his wife, Wanda Brown of Moravia; his children, Michele (Kelly) Thompson of Cedar Rapids, and their children, Kate (Mitch) Helle (Harper, Max and Brooks Helle) and Taylor Thompson, Mike (Lisa) Brown of Moravia, and their children, Justin (Tiffany) Brown (Amelia and Wyatt Brown) and Cody (Nicole Holden) Brown, Mark (Shawnee) Brown and their son, Logan Brown, and Marty (Patty) Brown of Moravia and their children, Kendall Brown and Carson Brown; two nieces, Sheryl (Tom) Taajjes and Carol (Gary) Scott; as well as several friends and family members.
