Lawrence Willard Powell, age 91, of Udell, went to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, April 25, 2021 at MercyOne in Des Moines.

Lawrence was born May 8, 1929 in Centerville, Iowa, the son of Ora Allen Powell and Hazel Blanche (Price) Powell.  He graduated Valedictorian of Udell High School with the Class of 1946.  He continued his education at Parson’s College in Fairfield, and then went to Iowa State University in Ames.  While at Iowa State, Lawrence completed a two-year Farming Operations course.  On March 10, 1951, Lawrence enlisted into the United States Air Force.  He was united in marriage to Dorothy Marie Elschlager on October 28, 1951.  The couple made their home in Selma, Alabama, where Lawrence served in the military until April of 1953.  They moved to Udell, and he continued his military commitment in the United States Air Force Reserves, and was honorably discharged on April 30th, 1956.

The couple farmed in the Udell, Iowa area for sixty years, and had three children: David (Sharon) of Udell, Doug (Kim) of Kansas City, Missouri and Charlotte (Larry) near Lincoln, Nebraska.

Lawrence was a long-time member of the Brethren Church in Udell.  He was a Sunday School Superintendent, Song Leader, Sunday School teacher, and Church Deacon.   In his free time, Lawrence enjoyed listening to gospel music, singing, and doing work for Gideons International.  He spent two weeks on a mission trip to Russia in the mid 1990’s.  Lawrence was a committed Christian and Patriot.  He wrote hundreds of letters to the local newspaper editors about Christianity and patriotism.  He would often quote the saying “Land of the Free, Home of the Brave”.
