Mary Marie Coltrain, age 95 of Moravia, passed away Thursday, December 9, 2021. Mary was a kind, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who was loved by all who met her. Mary was born on August 23, 1926, on a farm northwest of Moravia, Iowa, the daughter of Ben Williams and Nellie (Wadsworth) Williams.
Mary learned to work hard and love the land at an early age choring with her father. She was a farm girl at heart with farming and caring for livestock her passions. On October 31, 1942, she married Kenneth Wayne Coltrain. Mary and Kenneth made their home on the Coltrain family farm East of Moravia where she worked hard farming side by side with Kenneth in the fields and with the sheep and cattle. After Kenneth’s death in 1980, Mary carried on the Coltrain farming tradition with difficult decisions and daily uncertainties a way of life for her. The Coltrain farm was recognized by the state of Iowa as a Century Farm in 1984.
Mary loved the fields, the wildlife, wildflowers, and the quiet countryside and had a reverent respect for nature and a solid loyalty to the farm. Her favorite hours were those spent on a tractor or working with the livestock. In later years, you could often see Mary enjoying daily car rides with her son, Larry, and visiting with old friends, as well as new friends, that she might meet by chance along the way.
In addition to farming, Mary was actively involved in the EUB church and the Grace United Methodist Church in Moravia and as her children were growing up, she was very active as a 4-H leader for many years. Mary was very proud to be one of the first two women to be inducted into the Moravia Ruritan. Perhaps her greatest accomplishment was studying for and earning her GED diploma prior to her youngest child graduating from high school.
Left to cherish Mary’s memory are her children, Richard (Barbara) Coltrain of Albia, Larry Coltrain of Moravia, Barbara Phillips of North Carolina, Janice Coltrain-Sapp (Norlan) of Plano, Texas, and Gary (Barbara) Coltrain of Oklahoma; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild; as well as five step grandchildren; nine step great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. All of whom loved her dearly and will never forget her tenacity, wit, grace, and undying love and caring for them.
In addition to her husband, Kenneth, Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Nellie Williams; three siblings, Raymond Williams, Pauline Wright and Lazelle Williams; a grandchild, Gage Coltrain; her son-in-law, Dave Phillips; and her sister-in-law, Lucille West.
