Obituary

Ronald Lee Dawson, age 73 of Lake Thunderhead, Missouri passed away Sunday, July 3, 2022 at the Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, Missouri.

He was born October 29, 1948 in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the son of N.E. “Doc” Dawson and LaVerne Hermanstorfer Dawson.  Ron graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1966.  He furthered his education at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, receiving degrees in Computer Maintenance and Welding.

He was united in marriage to Carolyn Granneman on June 21, 1968.  To this union of marriage, the couple celebrated two children, Shawn and Suzan.

Ron enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam era.  He served his country faithfully until his honorable discharge from the service.

Ron was employed as a maintenance electrician with John Deere in Ottumwa for 30 years until his eventual retirement.  Throughout his employment with John Deere, he was very proud of his membership in the UAW Local 74 as the Skilled Trades Representative.

Ron had many passions.  He loved outdoor activities, including fitness sports, such as cycling and running.  Moreover, he competed in half marathons, triathlons, and cherished sharing many experiences with his wife and children on RAGBRAI. 

Ron also enjoyed traveling with his wife, Carolyn.  They engaged in many travel adventures, seeing all 50 states throughout the years.  Furthermore, the couple enjoyed numerous trips to the Caribbean. 

As longtime members of the Heartland Bootscooters Dance Club in Ottumwa, Iowa, Ron and Carolyn enjoyed countless nights dancing together. 

Most importantly, Ron cherished his family as a devoted husband, father and grandfather.  

Left to honor his memory include his loving wife of 54 years, Carolyn Dawson of Lake Thunderhead, Missouri; his mother, LaVerne Herrick of Iowa City, Iowa, two children, Shawn (Angela) Dawson of Oskaloosa, Iowa and Suzan (Jason) Hauser of Dunedin, Florida; a step-mother, Doris Ann Dawson of Iowa City, Iowa; two grandchildren, Jack and Emma Dawson of Oskaloosa, Iowa; six siblings, Don Dawson, Kelly Herrick, Deaette (Mike) Jones, Doug Dawson, Monty (Connie) Herrick, and Vicky Hansen; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Ron was preceded in death by his father.

According to wishes, cremation has been accorded.  Private family services will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, Ron would love for you all to donate to your favorite charity in his name.  Condolences may be shared online at www.langefh.com or on our Facebook page.
